Kinja'd!!!

This one came in the mail yesterday.

A soviet era mechanical Raketa 24 hour watch with the 2623.H movement.

The idea behind the 24 hour dial is that crew on submarines or polar explorers knew wether it was AM/PM. Or just to sound cool. I guess most were sold on the latter.

Fits nice with the rest of the family:

I’m a design and space nerd. You can’t go wrong with a brand called Raketa (rocket) that made Soviet mechanical watches with odd designs.

Nice collection. I got mine haggling (via translator) in a market on the outskirts of Moscow, and it always gets a look. Unfortunately, I don’t wear watches often, so it mostly just looks cool on the desk. You’re right on the 24h dial, and as a bonus, you get 4-hour “shifts” on the outer ring. (Mine has a second hour ring, which you set to the local hour while keeping the face on a standard time zone.)

Also, love the Big Zero and Copernic. Very cool watches, each.

Ah yeah, the one with the second ring is pretty awesome too. That might be the next gift ot myself. These though were the three I wanted once I learned about these kind of watches.

I bought (2 of 3) from an ebay seller called Samun. He is very well regarded by some forums that focus on soviet watches. I can recommend him. reasonable pricing, quick shipping and the money he makes he puts back into his own collection.

I love the copernic, but I got caught out in a rainstorm once and now it runs fast.. I’m afraid the cost of servicing it might be about the same as a new watch.
